Teacher of the Month February 2012- Lynnette Chertorisky

SACRAMENTO, CA - As a young woman her career path was uncertain, but for the last 30 years Lynnette Chertorisky has known her passion is teaching.

Chertorisky teaches 5th grade and is a band instructor at Matsuyama Elementary School. She is a woman who comes from a long line of educators.

Despite her family history, Chertorisky wasn't set on making teaching her profession, that is, until she worked at Baskin Robbins.

"That's when I knew I really like the training part and I said I have to do something more meaningful than teaching how to scoop, that's when I knew I wanted to teach," Chertorisky said.

In addition to outstanding class test scores, the long time teacher often spends hours of her own time rehearsing with the school's band, made up of 5th and 6th graders.

Alison Newens plays the clarinet and said she is extremely proud of her music teacher. When asked to describe Ms. Chertorisky the words flowed without hesitation.

"She is amazing, musical and funny," said the soft-spoken sixth grader.

Outside of the classroom, Chertorisky's plays flute, kayaks and cooks; pastimes she fits in when she's not creating lesson plans or tutoring students in need.

Chertorisky's extraordinary dedication has not gone without notice. Colleagues said she goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Principal of Matsuyama Elementary, Norm Tanaka recalls one of her students recently receiving a prestigious music award.

"After he took a family photo he runs up to Ms. Chertorisky, hugs her and says 'I couldn't have done this without you.'"

Chertorisky is humbled by the honor of News10's February Teacher of the Month. She calls working with her students and seeing them excel extremely fulfilling.

"It's the most wonderful feeling, a gift honestly that I get to go home at the end of the day and put my head on that pillow and know that a child was able to go as far as they could that day."
